Rhinoplasty overview
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure used to reshape the nose to better harmonize with your face shape or features, or address concerns related to symmetry of the nose in relation to your face. Rhinoplasty surgery may also be used to enhance breathing function by correcting deviated septums or repairing interior nasal structures. The term rhinoplasty is used interchangeably with nose job or nasal surgery.

Types of rhinoplasty
There are two types of surgical rhinoplasty techniques.
In the open rhinoplasty technique, an external incision is made along the bottom of the nose and the nasal skin is peeled back. This approach is ideal for more complex cases that require significant reshaping or structural corrections. However, recovery time is slightly longer with this technique.
Using the closed rhinoplasty technique, currently called a preservation rhinoplasty, incisions are placed inside the nose, which means there are no external scars. This is the technique Dr. Palmer prefers, and has been using for many years.
For individuals not ready to commit to full rhinoplasty surgery, non-surgical or liquid rhinoplasty may be a viable option. This procedure uses dermal fillers to reshape and enhance the appearance of the nose without surgery. It can be performed in under 30 minutes, with results typically lasting 12-24 months, depending on the type of filler used.

Devoted care at every step
What to expect before and during your rhinoplasty procedure
During your pre-operative appointment, Dr. Palmer will evaluate your nasal structure, facial features, nasal breathing and aesthetic goals to create a surgical plan. This appointment may also include bloodwork or other screening protocol to ensure you are healthy and won’t experience complications during surgery or recovery.
Unlike some other practices, Dr. Palmer prefers to do his rhinoplasties using intravenous sedation, as it leads to quicker recovery and has a lower risk compared to general anesthesia. Patients continue to breathe on their own and control their bodily functions but are completely asleep during the procedure and therefore feel no pain during the operation.

Better results. Faster recovery
Rhinoplasty results and recovery process
Dr. Palmer’s unique rhinoplasty intra-operative protocol dramatically reduces bleeding and bruising, allowing for faster recovery. It also removes the need for nasal packing, which can cause significant discomfort, difficulty breathing, and pain during removal.
After your rhinoplasty procedure, expect to:
Take 7 days off work
Wear post-operative splints for approximately 6 days
See results as soon as the splint is removed, usually 4-6 days after surgery

Rhinoplasty FAQ
There is no difference between nose job and rhinoplasty. Nose job is a more casual term for rhinoplasty, a surgical procedure used to enhance the aesthetics or function of the nose. Rhinoplasty is the term used in medical settings.
In some rare cases insurances may cover medically necessary breathing corrections,or surgery used to correct nasal damage from trauma. However, cosmetic rhinoplasty to purely enhance appearance is typically not covered.
Rhinoplasty is generally not very painful, with most patients reporting mild discomfort rather than severe pain. Dr Palmer has also developed an intra-operative protocol that dramatically reduces bleeding and bruising, allowing for faster recovery.
Yes, rhinoplasty can be considered a major surgery, as it can involve reshaping the bone, cartilage, or tissue of the nose. However, it is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and is low-risk when performed by experienced plastic surgeons.
When performed by Dr. Palmer, rhinoplasty patients look significantly better than before surgery by the time the nasal splints are removed, usually on the sixth postoperative day. Surgical results will then continue to look better over the next six to twelve months.
No surgery is 100% safe, including rhinoplasty. However, Dr. Palmer has an impeccable safety record, and choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and closely following post-operative care instructions minimizes potential risks like scarring or infection.
