The nipple and areola are NOT removed and horizontal scaring is rarely necessary. Drs. Palmer and Stern also directly suture the breast tissue to the chest, giving patients better cleavage and a longer-lasting lift. The sensation is usually preserved, and breastfeeding is almost always possible after a breast reduction. No drains are used in the postoperative period, and there usually is very little postoperative pain. Patients can usually return to work or school within three to four days after surgery.
