Liposuction overview

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat from localized areas of the body, most commonly the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and neck—though it can be used anywhere on the body. It is used to target fatty deposits that cannot or will not respond to changes in exercise, and is often performed alongside other complementary procedures like tummy tuck or Renuvion (J Plasma) for skin tightening.

With liposuction, we can address:

Types of liposuction

There are several different liposuction techniques, each of which follows essentially the same steps. The procedure begins with a mechanism that’s designed to break up the fatty deposits, with traditional liposuction using either a vibrating cannula or fluids to aid in the extraction process.

However, more advanced technologies include the use of ultrasound or laser to liquefy fat before removal. Once dislodged, the fat is then suctioned out using a vacuum or a syringe attached to a cannula.

Liposuction is commonly performed in conjunction with energy-based modalities, like Renuvion, designed to help tighten the skin once the excess fat is removed.

Devoted care at every step

What to expect before and during your liposuction procedure

During your pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Palmer will finalize surgical plans and answer any additional questions you may have. If compression garments are part of the post-surgical plan, measurements may also be taken during this appointment. Lab tests or clearance from your primary doctor may be requested depending on your health status.

The length of liposuction surgery can vary widely–lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours. It is performed using intravenous anesthesia, with patients being put to sleep for a painless experience. The use of intravenous sedation instead of general anesthesia allows patients to continue breathing and controlling their own bodily functions without the need for a breathing tube—this technique is safer and allows patients to recover quicker.

After waking up, you will remain in the clinic and be supported by our nursing staff until you are released and able to return home with a chaperone

Better results. Faster recovery

Liposuction results and recovery process

Dr. Palmer avoids the use of drains whenever possible to increase patient comfort during the recovery phase. However, it’s normal to experience swelling and discomfort after liposuction surgery and to be required to wear compression garments for several weeks to minimize swelling and support your body as it heals.

After your liposuction procedure, expect to:

  • Limit activity for one week after surgery

  • Return to work after five to seven days

  • Notice swelling and bruising subside after several weeks

  • Return to regular physical activity after three to four weeks

Liposuction FAQ

Liposuction can produce a permanent correction in the treated areas.

Liposuction has continued to increase in safety, with advanced medical technology and techniques being utilized for better and safer results. However, no surgery is without its risks and should be performed by an experienced and board certified plastic surgeon.

Liposuction is not considered to be an especially painful surgery. But patients should expect a mild to moderate level of discomfort during their recovery period.

Liposuction can be used to remove excess fat from the belly, love handles, thighs, and hips. However, if puffy, loose skin on the belly is your main concern, Dr. Palmer may also recommend abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery in conjunction with Renuvion

Liposuction is generally considered a cosmetic, elective surgery, and is therefore not commonly covered by insurance. However, details regarding payment plan options will be provided during your private consultation.

Most complications are mild, with less than 2% of patients experiencing complications related to liposuction. All surgeries come with a degree of risk, which is why choosing an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon is important.
