Arm lift in Ft. Lauderdale

Stubborn fat and sagging arm skin can hide the results of hard work, diet, and exercise. An arm lift (aka brachioplasty) can help to address excess skin and fat that affects your confidence and keeps you wearing long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothing. By removing skin and fat from the upper arm, an arm lift aims to tighten and reshape the arms for a slimmer, more toned appearance.

Arm lift overview

What is an arm lift?

Also known as brachioplasty, an arm lift is a surgical procedure that involves removing loose skin and fat from the tricep area to address skin redundancy resulting from loss of skin elasticity or weight fluctuations. This procedure can help to address a loose upper arm appearance that does not respond to diet or exercise, in an effort to leave your arms looking tighter and more defined.

Am I a good candidate for an arm lift?

Anyone who is self-conscious and avoids wearing fitted tops or short sleeves due to the appearance of their upper arms may be a good candidate for arm lift surgery. The best candidates are non-smokers who have a relatively stable weight, are within a healthy weight range, and aren’t on any medications that may affect the recovery process.

With an arm lift, we can address:

  • Excess arm skin and fat due to aging or weight loss

  • Upper arm drooping

  • A ‘bat’ wing appearance

  • Localized fat pockets

  • Loose upper arm appearance

Types of arm lift

There are three popular incision types for brachioplasty, which include the standard, extended, and minimal incision. The incisions, which differ in location and length, provide differing degrees of lift.

Standard or traditional brachioplasty involves creating an incision from the elbow to the armpit to remove the skin and fatty tissue. With the goal being to hide the scar as much as possible, Dr. Palmer opts to place the incision along the inner upper arm—meaning the scar is generally not visible when standing with your arms by your sides.

An extended arm lift is similar to traditional brachioplasty, with the exception being that the incision extends onto the lateral chest wall, allowing for excess skin and fat to be removed from these areas too. It is the most dramatic arm lift technique and is generally performed on patients after extreme weight loss.

Minimal incision brachioplasty is better known as short scar brachioplasty and involves placing the scar in the armpit for minimal visibility. Although not completely scarless, the scar length is much smaller than a traditional arm lift and is very well hidden.

Dr. Palmer may also recommend the use of liposuction and Renuvion skin tightening in combination with an armlift.

Devoted care at every step

What to expect before and during your arm lift procedure

During your arm lift consultation with Dr. Palmer, the best arm lift technique for providing results while limiting scarring will be discussed. Along with answering any of your questions, medical tests to ensure your health, such as blood work or an EKG for patients over age 50, will also be performed.

For arm lift surgery, sedation is administered intravenously, allowing patients to remain in a sleep-like state for a painless surgical experience. This sedation type negates the need for a breathing tube, as patients can breathe on their own and control their bodily functions, and is therefore more risk-free compared to general anesthesia.

Arm lift surgery typically lasts between one to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure and whether additional treatments, such as liposuction and Renuvion skin tightening, are performed simultaneously. After recovering alongside staff for a short while post-surgery, patients are released to continue recovering at home.

Better results. Faster recovery

Arm lift results and recovery process

The tightening effects of arm lift surgery are apparent almost immediately after surgery, although there will likely be some degree of swelling and bruising.

After your arm lift procedure, expect to:

  • Return to work after five to seven days

  • Experience mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for three to four weeks

  • Wear compression garments to minimize swelling

Arm Lift FAQ

Generally, the pain after arm lift surgery is mild to moderate, with some bruising and swelling being normal. Dr. Palmer’s unique lifting technique allows him to minimize post-operative pain, with minimal downtime required.

By continuing to care for your body through a healthy diet and regular exercise, the results of arm lift surgery are relatively permanent. However, loss of skin elasticity may affect firmness over time.

The effects of arm lift surgery don’t have an overly large impact on the scale. However, the removal of fat and loose skin on the upper arms can contribute to an overall more toned and tighter upper body appearance.

Because arm lift, or brachioplasty, surgery is considered cosmetic, most insurance companies will not cover the procedure. Palmer Cosmetic Surgery offers multiple payment plan options that can be discussed during your private consultation.

The effect that arm lift surgery can have on confidence and body image can make it well worth the investment. Additionally, when well-maintained, the results of brachioplasty can last for upwards of ten years to a lifetime.

Healthy lifestyle habits can help to improve the look of loose and sagging upper arm skin. However, an arm lift offers the most tightening and lifting potential.
