Cellulite is a troublesome problem affecting a large number of people. It primarily is found in women, most often in the thigh and buttocks region. The reason cellulite develops is that fat protrudes between fibrous septae (bands of fibers) which connect the skin to the underlying muscle. This creates unsightly bulges and depressions. As more fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough cords pull down. This creates an uneven surface and dimpling.

Genetic factors, hormonal factors, skin texture, fat accumulation, and muscle tone all can contribute to the development and progression of cellulite. Many people have cellulite, and virtually nobody wants it. The development of cellulite is not necessarily due to being overweight. Many people who are underweight or in a normal weight range can also get cellulite. Until quite recently, there has been no effective cellulite treatment

There is some very good news. A new device, called Aveli, has recently gained FDA approval for the treatment of cellulite. It is a one-time treatment and can be done under local anesthesia, and it works. The way it works is by precisely dividing the fibrous septae which causes the skin to ripple and depress the skin, giving the appearance of cellulite. Through a tiny incision in the buttocks crease, the Aveli handpiece is inserted under the skin and advanced to the cellulitic depressions. With the press of a button and a gentle pull, the bands are released and the cellulite is corrected.

It is a one-time treatment which takes about an hour. It can be done under local anesthesia, or combined with liposuction and skin tightening procedures.
