A rhinoplasty procedure, more commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure done to correct either the appearance of the nose, the functionality of the nose, or both. A cosmetic procedure is done to make the patient’s nose more attractive, while functional procedure is done to restore normal function to the nose and enable the patient to breathe more easily.

Examples of functional rhinoplasty procedures include repairing a broken nose and correcting a deviated septum.

What Does Rhinoplasty Involve?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure. The patient can go home after a short recovery period, during which our medical staff will monitor them. Depending on what the surgery involves, the procedure can be either closed or open.

During the procedure, our surgeon can make the nose smaller by removing excess bone and/or cartilage. He can enlarge the nose using specialized techniques. He can also straighten the nose or make the tip and/or nostrils more proportionate.

The procedure is completely customized based on the patient’s wants and needs. It takes an artistic eye on the part of the surgeon to see how to carry out the patient’s vision.

Depending on what the surgeon needs to do, a rhinoplasty can take anywhere from one hour to four hours. For example, if the patient wants a larger nose, the surgeon will have to collect the needed cartilage from another part of the patient’s body.

Some surgeons use general anesthesia when performing a procedure of this kind, but Dr. Palmer prefers to use sedation. He also avoids nasal packing. His method dramatically reduces bleeding and bruising, which allows for a fast recovery. Usually six days after surgery their patients are ready to return to their normal activities with a better-looking or more functional nose.
